Sneak Peek

trek2

It was announced this morning that Paramount will be screening the first nine minutes of the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness movie before the new Hobbit movie opening on December 14th....

HOLLYWOOD, CA (November 14, 2012) – Paramount Pictures will release the first 9-minutes from J.J. Abrams’ eagerly-awaited “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” exclusively in IMAX 3D months prior to the film’s official release in May 2013. This first-look at the movie will play in approximately 500 digital IMAX 3D theatres beginning December 14th.

“Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “Their use of the IMAX® Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”

As excited as I am to see the new Star Trek movie, I don't really want to see the first nine minutes and then have to wait five months to see the rest of the movie.

I'd rather see a trailer and be intrigued to see the film, not see an actual portion of it.

Plus, I am not planning to see the Hobbit movies in IMAX 3D (unless I love it so much in "regular D" that I decide to see all of the formats). Other than Avatar, I haven't really been impressed with 3D technology...so, I'll wait for those reviews.

Picard2

So, I'll just wait until the trailer comes out...or until the nine minutes end up online (which never happens) and I accidentally see it there.

A trip to Hobbiton

Photobucket

As many of you know, they filmed the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy entirely in New Zealand. It was another reason I was very excited about visiting this country, to see some of the scenery (although almost anywhere you go here, it looks like a location from the movie).

Photobucket

There are also MANY "Lord of the Rings" tours in each of the major cities around New Zealand. There are tours by bus, train, boat, plane and helicopter. The two things that they all have in common is that they are generally expensive (the more modes of transport and time you invest) and that none of them have any on the sets still intact...so, as I mentioned in the past, you're just seeing lovely scenery and told "This is where blah, blah, blah happened or was built.".

Well...except for ONE. The Hobbiton tour....

Photobucket

And it was supposed to be torn down when filming ended, like all the others.

There were 37 Hobbit holes/homes created (among other Hobbiton town sets built on this location) and 20 of them had already been torn down after filming ended. However, on the day that the rest of them were supposed to be demolished, New Zealand got hit with several days of rain and the crew asked the studio if they could come back in six months to do the rest, because the ground was too wet, unstable for them to use their machinery. Fortunately, for fans of the movie (and the sheep farmer that owns this land), they still remain.

Photobucket

After filming had stopped, the owner started noticing random groups of people who would stop by to ask permission to see the area where the movie had been shot. As surprise visits to his farm started to become a regular thing, he decided to keep the remaining hobbit holes and spent two years negotiating with New Line Cinema to turn the area into a tourist spot. A deal was worked out and 5 years later, people still arrive several times a day, 7 days a week, and are given the grand tour.

Although he owns 1,250 acres of land to work his 12,000 sheep and 300 cattle, it has been said that he makes more money per year on just the tour, than his already very successful farm. I believe it.

When you are driven back about a mile into the land, where the set is located, you can see why Peter Jackson chose this location...it looks untouched by people and beautiful no matter which direction you look.

Photobucket

Although New Zealand is still in the middle of a 12 year drought, it is still pretty green and lovely to stroll around.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The only hobbit hole that you can actually enter is the one, in the movie, where Bilbo Baggins and Frodo lived at the top of the hill. As you can see from the "before" shot above, they are much more....barren now (they weren't allowed to recreate the copyrighted gardens/set-front designs). But, since Peter Jackson needed shots looking out from that one, they built an inside room with space for the camera equipment and small crew to shoot out. So, of course, this is where everyone gets their picture taken (generally peeking out the door or window).

The view from inside out...is pretty nice and it does kind of give you the feeling that you could be in another world.

Photobucket

You can see the "Party Tree" (the area where they shot off the fireworks and had their festival at the opening of the first movie) and the lake behind it. That tree and lake is what ended up making this location THE one.

Photobucket

Since the book described, in great detail, this large tree by the lake in Hobbiton, Peter Jackson was determined to find a location that would be true to that. They had 3 different locations already chosen to use as parts of Hobbiton, but when the location crew found this lake and tree...then noticed the rolling hills behind them....the other sites were scrapped and it was all filmed here.

Photobucket

Oh....and as you probably noticed, there are a lot of sheep around (it being a working sheep farm and all).

Photobucket

They are kept out of the hobbit holes (well, unless someone leaves a gate open or they find a hole in the fence), but are given free access to the rest of the area. So, with 12,000 sheep around...it also means that you're gonna step in a lot of...

Photobucket

You can't avoid it and you're warned about it as you step off the bus at the beginning of the tour...but they have special brushes up by the entrance/exit and after a few minutes, you're all ready to board the bus and head back to the Shire's Rest for your lunch (included in the price, thankfully), a hand-washing and a last chance to buy some souvenirs before hopping back on the bus for home.

Photobucket

Photobucket

To be honest, I almost didn't take take this excursion (it was between this and a 5 hour bus ride up north to a beach area that is supposed to be nice), but in the end...I'm really glad I did.

Because, no matter how often I try to downplay to others and, especially, myself about how much of a Sci-Fi/Fantasy geek I really am...

Photobucket

It was really frickin' cool to be there!

Hobbit Video Blog 9

hobbit-video-blog-9

Peter Jackson has released a new video blog that covers the final production stages of getting the Hobbit movie ready for release next month.

Just like the others, it's very entertaining and informative.

Embiggen the video screen below to enjoy the full visual experience.

Only a couple more weeks until the first part is released in theaters.

Yeah!

Call me, maybe?

Photobucket

I thought that was hilarious.

Also, some more good Star Trek news was announced today...

The first trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness will premiere with screenings of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. To be clear this Trek trailer is a completely different thing than the 9-minute preview of the beginning of the new movie which will be shown at IMAX screenings of the Hobbit film. Also TrekMovie has confirmed that the IMAX screenings will not be showing the trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness.

So if you want to see the full trailer, see non-IMAX Hobbit and if you want to see preview of the opening 9 minutes see IMAX Hobbit.

As I said in yesterday's post, I would rather see a trailer about the overall film, than just the first nine minutes and have to wait to see the rest of the film in May.

So I'm even more excited to see The Hobbit next month!

Squeeeee!

Taylor Negron

 photo 227fffe5-ed90-4e4c-9670-7cc78bb26d59_zps15fc7619.jpg

Some very sad news over the weekend...

Taylor Negron—an actor, playwright and essayist who became "fame-ish" after appearing in more than 100 films and television shows—died Saturday. He was 57.

Although Negron never became a household name, he appeared in some of the biggest films and TV shows of the 80's and 90's, including Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Easy Money, Punchline, Seinfeld, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. He continued to act, write and paint until his illness worsened in recent years.

He was such a funny character actor and essayist. I always enjoyed watching him, no matter what the venue.

Taylor also wrote a very insightful final article for xoJane that everyone should read. Here is the article and a little sample of what he has to say...

The demographic that is most the stunning is the number of fans I have in the homeless population. One friendly guy who lives near me in a cluster of garbage cans always high-fives me because I was in "The River’s Edge." I love that guy. Because we are both That Guys.

But my heyday is coming to an end.

Parts for the alternative everyman are increasingly scarce. I have had to let go of my dream of being in a Hobbit movie. This will never happen unless Bilbo Baggins orders a pizza and we all know that when a hobbit orders a pizza in Middle Earth, someone is going down a wet, nasty, dirty hole and as I would say if I were in a buddy cop movie: "I am getting too old for this shit."

I don't miss Hollywood.

But we will definitely miss him.

Fat Bastards

Meet the new Green Lantern.

Warner Bros. has finally cast Ryan Reynolds in the title role for their upcoming movie, after months of speculation.

I think Ryan will be a good fit as long as he agrees to work out a bit.

I mean, who wants a superhero with all of that body fat on them?

Speaking of body fat, the first promo poster for Jake Gyllenhaal's upcoming "Prince of Persia" movie was also released this week. It doesn't come out until next year, but the studio knows that the sooner you release tidbits about the plot...people start to decide whether they want to see the movie or not.

The only bits they've released so far have just been a few subtle visual images like this...

I don't know what they're trying to say about the movie with this image, but I have a feeling that some people already have their tickets.

If you want to see a few more of these earlier "visual clues"...click here.

And finally, the OneRing.Net has revealed that landscaping has finally begun on the New Zealand Hobbiton location for the two upcoming "Hobbit" movies that are being made over the next couple of years.

As some of your remember, I paid a visit to Hobbiton last year and had a really great time.

It would be cool to be able to go back when the location is all ready for shooting and see the transformation. However, I'm sure they close the set to visitors once things are in production.

Perhaps if I bring the Prince of Persia and Green Lantern, they'll allow me and my two fat friends in for a quick peek.

It would be rude not to...

The Hobbit Trailer 2

A slightly updated trailer was released over the weekend for the first Hobbit movie, coming out in December.  Like the previous one, it looks good.

December seems so far away at this point....

New Hobbit video blog...

Photobucket

Peter Jackson has released a third video blog from the set of the new Hobbit movie being filmed in New Zealand. Much of it focuses on the new Hobbits in the film (above).

I really enjoy these behind-the-scenes peeks.
