FIRST LOOK: Hobbit Poster and Trailer

 photo 1da8f1c1-fc7f-4e3f-9404-41f7b58b3530_zps185465ce.jpg

Peter Jackson released the first Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug poster over the weekend on his Facebook page and then, today, released the first official trailer (which is rumored to be showing with Man of Steel this weekend).

It's nice to see the first appearances of Orlando Bloom and Evangeline Lily as Tauriel, as well.

The trailer looks pretty cool, although I honestly think that the Hobbit films are using too much CGI (unlike the Lord of the Rings films which, although they used a lot of CGI, had a much nicer balance of real locations/sets and much more subtle/realistic-looking CGI).

The Hobbit movies look more like a video game (just like the two Matrix sequels did), than a live action-adventure film.

But...I'm still looking forward to watching them anyway because they are pretty amazing video games to watch!

UPDATE: Peter Jackson just uploaded a video of Evangeline Lily, Orlando Bloom, and Lee Pace watching a video of two kids seeing the new Hobbit trailer for the first time. It's funny to see their reaction to the fan's excitement for the film and their characters.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens on December 13th.

Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel in The Hobbit

 photo 4eb09bb1-feb3-4af4-8e6a-3ef56d0f0424_zps62ac6718.jpg

Entertainment Weekly recently released one of the first images of Evangeline Lilly as the new elf, Tauriel, in the upcoming two Hobbit sequels.

Here is what she has to say about her character...

“She’s a Sylvan Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She doesn’t hold the same kind of status that Arwen or Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do — she’s much more lowly. She sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit. She will definitely have a love story.

I can’t give away too much about it. It’s not a huge focus but it is there and it is important and it does drive Tauriel and her story and her actions. Tauriel’s relationship with Legolas is significant. They’ve known each other since they were children, and Legolas’ dad, [Elven king] Thranduil, has a soft spot for Tauriel and sees something very special in her. So if you grow up side by side, and your dad has a very special spot in his heart for this young woman who’s a fantastic warrior, I think it’s hard not to notice her. That’s probably as much as I can say."

Total Film Magazine also released a couple photos and a bit of information about her character...

Evangeline Lilly is playing an entirely new character (ie. not in the book) in the upcoming Hobbit sequels, so it should come as no surprise to find out that the former Lost actress scores a place on our list.

“She’s a very, very young elf,” Lilly told us. “She’s only 600 years old, unlike Legolas who’s like, 1,900 years old and Thranduil who’s about 3,000 years old. She doesn’t have quite the wisdom and pose that those two boys do; she’s a little more... gritty. A little more spontaneous, passionate perhaps.”

Taking her bow in The Desolation Of Smaug, Tauriel is a fighter who makes a mess with finesse. “To play this character I need to have a certain amount of grace,” said Lilly. “But I’m also supposed to be an absolutely ruthless, deadly killer."

I really liked her on Lost, so am looking forward to her popping up in the next two Hobbit sequels.

She looks pretty good for 600 years old.

It's hard to believe she and Joan Rivers are almost the same age.

Stephen Colbert graces all three of the upcoming EW magazine covers for their The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies tribute issues.

He's a geek and a really big fan of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, even getting a cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug last year.

Here he is describing and showing his transformations for the covers on his show…

He's very entertaining and I'm more than a wee bit jealous.

The final battle begins

I'm going to see The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies on Sunday. I'm really looking forward to it, but keeping my expectations low…just in case.

The folks at Honest Trailers also released their overview of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug that was released this time last year. They're pretty spot on…

Smaug Index

 photo Tauriel_zps13b09313.jpg

A new longer trailer was released today for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Although the CGI quotient looks a bit higher than I would like, at least this part appears to have a lot more action than the first one.

I'm in.

Hobbit Video Blog 12

 photo c69c5c1e-4cf4-4a88-aa98-d4b0ea0dac96_zpseb359a47.jpg

Peter Jackson posted a new video blog from the set of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug today. Just like the others, it's very entertaining and enjoyable to watch how much fun they all seem to be having making these movies.

Embiggen the screen to get the full visual effect.

However, I'm not looking forward to the giant spiders scene.

Smaugglers

Empire Magazine revealed their new upcoming cover art today, which is focused on the elves in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

I'm glad they're starting to promote Evangeline Lily (playing elf warrior Tauriel) more now that the second movie is prepping to open in December.

Honestly, the elves are my favorite part of the movies/books. They have the coolest clothes, live in the most beautiful city, and they have bouncin' and behavin' hair and pointed ears.

It's really a win-win all the way around.

Lucky pointy-eared bastards.

They do a great job with the artwork for these...just wish there was a poster for Kili.

Maybe later...I'm a patient person.

The Hobbit: Video Blog 11

 photo a19817e4-f0a1-4069-b8d4-1e8e2b47ba17_zps2b771ce9.jpg

Peter Jackson just posted a new video blog on his Facebook page. This one covers gathering the cast and crew together again to shoot some additional scenes for the upcoming movies, including The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

As with the previous video blogs, it's very entertaining...

Also, last week was Orlando Bloom's final day on the set and he and the crew celebrated with a few beers and this entertaining video...

It looks like they might have had just a "little" to drink before putting that together.

Here is the original "They're taking the Hobbits to Isengard" video remix.

Now that song is stuck in my head....

The Hobbits, the Hobbits, the Hobbits, the Hobbits...to Isengard!

Step into the light

 photo 5975271b-b470-4b02-8d74-228a023fa450_zpsc6122b66.jpg

The new trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was released today and it's looking pretty good.

The last movie was a bit disappointing (too much obvious CGI for my taste), but still worth watching.

Hopefully this one will kick things up a notch...or three.

The film opens December 13th.
