I really enjoy this show and was very excited to find out today that it was just renewed for a fifth season.

Kaye Ballard
Very sad news today...
Kaye Ballard, a comic actress and singer who was a regular presence on TV for decades and starred in the late-’60s NBC comedy The Mothers-in-Law, has died at 93.
Ballard had appeared on a couple of TV programs when she was cast as Marge opposite Jane Powell and Cliff Robertson in the 1958 big-screen musical comedy remake of The Girl Most Likely. She would appear in a handful of movies in the ensuing decades, but TV was her go-to medium.
In 1967 she starred with Eve Arden in The Mothers-in-Law, playing half of an unconventional couple, the Buells, who was best friends with their very-straight suburban neighbors the Hubbards (Arden and Herbert Rudley). he also recurred on The Doris Day Show in the early 1970s, made dozens of visits to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Mike Douglas Show and did more than a 150 episodes of The Hollywood Squares from 1967-69 and again in 1975., Ballard also guested on dozens of TV shows form the 1950s into the ’90s.
Ballard attended a screening of a documentary on her career titles Kaye Ballard: The Show Goes On, less than two weeks ago at the Palm Springs Cultural Center.
She was a very funny lady, had a very long career, and always made you laugh whenever she was on screen.
She will be missed, but definitely fondly remembered.

Unbreak my heart
A trailer for the final six episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was released today...
I'm really going to miss this show and cast when it ends after these remaining episodes. It always manages to make me laugh, no matter how silly it gets (and it gets very silly, but in a good way).
The new episodes become available on Netflix January 25th.

Carol Channing
Very sad news in the entertainment world today...
Carol Channing, a Broadway legend who was known for her signature lead role in Hello, Dolly! and continued performing well into her 90s, has died of natural causes at her home in Rancho Mirage, CA. She was 97.
A native of Seattle, Channing’s distinctively gravelly enunciation, lanky, energetic frame and carefree laugh marked her many decades in show business. Along with her remarkable 4,500 performances in the title role of Hello, Dolly!, she appeared in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Vamp and Lorelei.
On movie screens, she received Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for her performance in Thoroughly Modern Millie and also appeared in the films Skidoo and The First Traveling Saleslady. On television, she appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and the Hollywood Squares.
A hit from its opening night in 1964, Hello, Dolly! went on to win 10 Tony Awards, and Channing won for Best Actress in a Musical. Channing would make her final Broadway appearance in a 1995 revival of the show.
“Performing is the only excuse for my existence,” she said at the time. “What can be better than this?”
She was an iconic personality and had a very long and successful career doing something show loved. We should all be so lucky.
She will be missed.

She keeps on Trekkin'
Great news today for Star Trek: Discovery fans...
CBS All Access has officially signed Michelle Yeoh to star in her own, so-far-untitled Star Trek series. “I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories,” Yeoh said in a statement. “Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!’”
The show—written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt—won’t focus on Yeoh’s Star Trek: Discovery character Phillipa Georgiou, the noble Starfleet Captain we met at the beginning of the series; instead, she’ll get to dive further into the version of Georgiou from the Mirror Universe, former Emperor of the evil Terran Empire, who found herself brought over to Star Trek’s primary timeline in the back half of Discovery’s debut season.
That means that aside from exploring this much more villainous interpretation of Georgiou, the series will dive into the character’s time as a recruit of Section 31: the shadowy Federation black-ops group first introduced in Deep Space Nine as a hidden branch of Starfleet tasked with doing the dirty work needed to maintain the Federation’s lofty utopian ideals.
She did a great job on the first season of the show and is set to recur on the second season, which starts airing this Thursday January 17th.
I look forward to watching the DVDs of these series when they become available (because I still refuse to pay for CBS All Access just to watch Star Trek).

Killer Art
The first trailer for the upcoming Netflix original thriller, Velvet Buzzsaw, was released today...
The art horror film reteams its stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo with Nightcrawler writer-director Dan Gilroy. Its features an all-star cast including Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen, and John Malkovich.
Written and directed by Gilroy, the satirical thriller is set in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.
It's looking pretty interesting and Jake Gyllenhaal usually picks pretty good projects, so I'll be adding this to my list to watch for sure.
The film will be available on February 1st.

Baby Face
Here's what the director had to say about the design of the aliens in Bird Box (which were ultimately cut from the film)...
“There was a point where we were like, ‘Do we need to [show] it?’” director Susanne Bier told io9. “We got beautiful, beautiful designs and then realized, ‘No. No we’re not going to do it because it’s not really about that.’”
When we spoke to Bier about the decision not to show the creatures, we also asked what the actors were told about what their characters were seeing. The answers apparently varied.
“Some of them asked about it,” she said. “Some of them would ask me and I would then suggest certain things, and some of them would just not say anything and just kind of see whatever they had in their mind and be equally terrified and distraught.” Which, she pointed out, is similar to what would have happened in Bird Box’s world. “Each individual would have a different perception than the other individual,” she said. Basically, in the end it was settled that nothing is scarier than your own imagination.
I do think it was a wiser choice not to show the aliens, especially this particular version. It leaves more to the imagination and forces the viewer to create their own idea in their minds.
Plus, giant evil baby-looking aliens might have distracted from the horror and unintentionally turned it into something a bit more campy, which would have been a completely different move altogether.
Here's the trailer...

Bat-tastic!
It looks like there is a possible series in the future for the CW's Batwoman after all...
Ruby Rose’s debut as Kate Kane during the CW’s Elseworlds event last year was undeniably interesting—but the question it left everyone with was whether the network would ultimately end up moving forward with its potential plans to give the character her own Batwoman spinoff in the future.
Technically, the CW has yet to full-on greenlight the would-be Batwoman series, but the latest bit of news suggests that we’re going to be seeing quite a bit more of Kate’s Gotham in the very near future. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the CW has given a pilot pickup order for Batwoman with The Vampire Diaries’ Caroline Dries attached as showrunner and Game of Thrones veteran David Nutter as director.
I liked her on the Elseworlds episode and think she could be a fun character to follow. Plus they got a Game of Thrones director for the pilot...that sounds promising.
Time will tell.

Brightburn
The first trailer for James Gunn's (Guardians of the Galaxy) next film, Brightburn, was released...
It looks like what would happen if Clark Kent's parents got a monster, instead of Superman.
Plus, it's got Elizabeth Banks as the Mom and Pam's ex-boyfriend (from The Office) playing the Dad.
I bet he wishes he had stayed with Pam now.
The film flies into theaters on Memorial Day.
