Oh, MY

It turns out that Star Trek Beyond has boldly gone where no Star Trek has ever gone before by revealing that Mr. Sulu (in the new timeline) is gay...

One of the “Star Trek” universe’s most beloved characters is revealed to be gay in the latest installment of the iconic franchise.

John Cho tells Australia’s Herald Sun that his character, Hikaru Sulu, will have a same-sex partner, with whom he is raising a daughter, in “Star Trek Beyond,” which hits theaters July 22.

The 44-year-old actor said that he approved of the way his character’s sexuality will be handled in the film, in that writer Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin opted not to make it a major plot point. “I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations,” he said.

Lin and Pegg’s decision to depict Sulu as a gay man was a nod to George Takei, who played the role in the original 1960s “Star Trek” television series and in six subsequent films, Cho said. Takei, 79, came out as gay in 2005, and has since gone on to become an outspoken advocate for LGBT rights.

You'd think George Takei, who is openly gay, would be happy about that. But, surprisingly, he was "disappointed".

He wasn’t cheering that the character he originated would bare his sexual preference, calling it “really unfortunate,” and saying that it wasn’t true to creator Gene Roddenberry’s vision for the character, and that the current filmmakers did not heed his concerns when he encouraged them to create a new character.

When I first read his response, I was surprised, yet understood. His character was straight. The actor playing him was not.

However, I started thinking that, since they are in an alternate timeline, his character could, realistically, be different (as many of the characters and their backgrounds are from the original series) in many ways.

So, as much as I enjoy George Takei (and he is enjoyable), I didn't actually think it was a bad idea.

Then, Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty and helped write the film's script, replied that he was also disappointed...with George Takei's response to the announcement.

“[Director] Justin Lin, [co-writer] Doug Jung and I loved the idea of [the gay character] being someone we already knew because the audience have a pre-existing opinion of that character as a human being, unaffected by any prejudice,” he said. “Their sexual orientation is just one of many personal aspects, not the defining characteristic. Also, the audience would infer that there has been an LGBT presence in the Trek universe from the beginning (at least in the Kelvin timeline), that a gay hero isn’t something new or strange.

“We could have introduced a new gay character, but he or she would have been primarily defined by their sexuality, seen as the ‘gay character’, rather than simply for who they are, and isn’t that tokenism?”

And, I kind of agree with Simon Pegg...if they had just created a a new gay character into the movie randomly, he/she would have likely gotten very little screen time (since many of the "regulars" barely get enough time as it is, especially Sulu) and it would have felt "forced" and then, likely, forgotten.

Then Zachary Quinto, who is also gay and plays Spock, responded with his disappointment as well.

“As a member of the LGBT community myself, I was disappointed by the fact that George was disappointed.”

He added: “I get it. He has had his own personal journey and has his own personal relationship with this character, but, you know, as we established in the first Star Trek film in 2009, we’ve created an alternate universe,” Quinto said. “And my hope is that eventually George can be strengthened by the enormously positive response from especially young people who are heartened by and inspired by this really tasteful and beautiful portrayal of something that I think is gaining acceptance and inclusion in our societies across the world, and should be.”

And I agree with him too.

So, at the end of the day, I'm totally fine with it.

Sulu is gay in this new universe.

I just want them to release the damn movie already!

Smells Like Sulu

 photo b1a93b23-6a3a-48e2-b3f5-739ba9a2b16e_zpsf4c5a070.jpg

Star Trek's George Takei has a signature scent now available for pre-order,..

George Takei, famous for his role as Sulu on "Star Trek", as well as his more recent role as an Internet-conquering social-media star, has joined the ranks of Bruce Willis and One Direction by offering his own branded perfume. The spray-on cologne is dubbed "Eau My," a punny reference to his catchphrase, "Oh myyyyy."

Takei teased fans, asking them to guess the name of the new fragrance. His Facebook followers offered up some real gems, including "Old Space," "Takei Me Now," and "Red Shirt." The cologne is described as having the following laundry list of smells: mandarin zest, Italian bergamot, fresh ozone, night-blooming jasmine, white freesia petals, sensual woods, crystallized amber, soft skin musk, and vetiver.

I think it's hilarious and I hope he makes millions from it.

Plus, I never tire of hearing George say it,  especially here.,,

Mr. and Mr. Sulu

First Ellen, and now...George Takei.

George Takei married his partner, Brad Altman over the weekend.

Among the 200 wedding guests were U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii, Los Angeles City Councilmember Jan Perry, humanitarian Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton, the couple’s best man Walter Koenig, (Chekov, Star Trek), “best lady” Nichelle Nichols (Uhura, Star Trek), GLAAD’s Director of Entertainment Media Damon Romine and fiancĂ© Charles Robbins, Executive Director of The Trevor Project (left). The famous Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles performed at the reception.

With Uhura as your Best Lady...I'm sure that everyone's hailing frequencies were wide open (so to speak) during the event.

William Shatner wasn't able to attend.

I'm sure they'll be some Hell toupee in George's next book for that snub.

If only they had

Only in Norway could a TV show, Glyne Tider, manage to gather such an eclectic group of B-D-list "celebrities" to "sing" (and I use that term very loosely) the Beatles classic Let It Be.

Where else will you find Roger Moore, Tonya Harding, Jason Alexander, Ricki Lake, Huey Lewis, Dolph Lundgren, Corbin Bernsen, Glenn Close, Judd Nelson, Alfonso Ribeiero, George Wendt, AND Steve Guttenberg (and that's only in the first minute or two...it gets worse) coming together to sing on a virtual beach? There have to be over 100 celebrities in this thing...how did we not hear of this before?

Enjoy.

I think George Takei sums it up best...

Boldly moving on

With all of the sad celebrity news the past couple of days (and the media's nauseating focus on every tiny detail about Michael Jackson and the world's apparent inability to cope with his passing), I thought I would just post a few entertaining Star Trek-related clips that I've seen over the past couple of weeks.

Here is a clip of Zachary Quinto (Spock/Sylar) freaking out last week while walking his dog...along with a man dressed as meat and a bloody butcher.

It's just one of those things that brings about more questions than anyone could possibly answer.

Here is a clip of Taylor Swift on the Country Music Awards talking about how she wants to be in the new Star Trek movie.

And, finally, here is a clip of the original "Star Trek" cast studying a very interesting phenomenon...

Maybe George Takei and William Shatner could finally resolve their longtime feuding by doing a CD together.

It would certainly sell tens of copies.

Galactic Munchies

Photobucket
Scientists have discovered a sun-like star that is slowly eating a planet...

Astronomers knew that stars were capable of swallowing planets in orbit around them, but this is the first time the event has been "seen" so clearly. The researchers say the planet, which is called Wasp-12b, may only have another 10 million years left before it is completely devoured.

Kinda scary, but 10 million years is plenty of time to do just about everything on your bucket list.

The only planet-eater I can remember hearing about was the one featured on the original Star Trek TV series.

Photobucket
However, it doesn't so much fill me with fear and dread as it reminds me of something else...

And, when you add some vanilla cream...it looks something like this:

So, if I found out that a fleet of these were heading towards Earth, I would simply strap on my feed-bag, look up into the sky and say...well, I think Star Trek's George Takei pretty much sums it up...

Delicious!

This movie looks like a big ole train wreck...

As George Takei would say...

Kate Is Enough

Kathy Griffin was on "Jimmy Kimmel" last week to talk about her book and to promote her new movie on Lifetime...

She actually looks pretty good with that haircut.

Plus, now that George Takei and his husband are going to be on the new "Newlywed Game", it's just good to see that he's branching out past Sulu and into leading man parts.

Lifetime: The place for lady drama.

Hilarious!

Kathy will also be appearing on "The View" tomorrow, which should be very interesting considering how much smack she talks about Barbara Walters and the fact that Kate Gosselin is currently on the View panel now (replacing Elisabeth Hasselcrack while she's off giving birth to another child who will need lots of therapy) . I wonder if Kate will chat with Kathy about playing her in the video above?

PLUS, Kathy can be seen hosting the "Creative Emmy Awards" (or the "Schmemmys" as she calls them) ceremony on E! tomorrow afternoon.

On a somber note, I was sad to hear that Henry Gibson passed away. I loved him on "Laugh In" and, most recently as the hilariously cantankerous Judge Brown on "Boston Legal".

I really miss that show and will certainly miss Henry.

Prometheus

A new extended trailer was released today and, as George Takei would say...Oh, MY!

Definitely enlarge the video player window to get the full effect!

If this movie is half as good as these trailers, it's gonna kick ass!

Also, here is the UK version, which features slightly different footage and keeps a quieter tone.

Fan-tastic

The new voyages of the old Starship Enterprise...

There are certainly many fans of the original "Star Trek" TV show still out there writing fan fiction, attending conventions and, for some, actually creating new episodes of the show with remarkable accuracy.

One of the best is "Star Trek: New Voyages". They write and film new episodes that take place as if the original "Star Trek" continued on into a fourth season. Through private funding, they've done an amazing job of recreating, in full, the original sets...right down to the lighting and sound effects. The bridge set looks exactly like it did in 1966.

They've also recreated the transporter room, sickbay, crew quarters and more.

Although they have recast the original characters with younger actors, they have managed to get many original series actors to guest-star on episodes. They've had George "Sulu" Takei, Walter "Chekov" Koenig, Denise "Tasha Yar" Crosby, and even got Marjel "Nurse Chapel" Barret-Roddenberry to voice the computer voice (as she did for all of the "Star Trek" series and movies over the years.

It's a pretty amazing accomplishment, considering they can't sell DVDs or make any kind of money off of their productions (Paramount licensing issues). They may not win any awards for acting, but their episodes have better special effects and editing than the original show, so they are certainly worth watching, if nothing else, just to take a little step back in TV time.

Their latest episode, "Blood and Fire", was actually based on a "Star Trek: Next Generation" series script by David Gerrold (he wrote the "Trouble with Tribbles" episode of the original show). It also features Captain Kirk's nephew, Peter, who also just happens to be gay and has a boyfriend serving on the Enterprise.

According to AfterElton.com, at the time (the 80's) the network decided that this kind of storyline was too risky ("shocking"), so it was scrapped. But, all these years later, Mr Gerrold brought it to the New Voyages people, Carlos Pedraza reworked it (see his comment at the end of this blog) and they filmed it. Here is a sneak peek...

Pretty good job for a group of everyday people who do this just for the fun of it.

With the new "Star Trek" movie coming out in May...I have a feeling that these kinds of fan films might just be the tip of the iceberg for what's to come.
