Things that make you go...

Spock's expression kind of sums up how I felt after I got done watching Star Trek Into Darkness last night.

Perplexed. Conflicted. Excited. Disappointed. Bueller.

As most of you know, I loved the 2009 movie.

LOVED it!

So, I think I went into this one with my expectations a bit too high for the sequel to realistically satisfy, no matter how hard it tried.

That being said, I don't want to spoil anything (since most people will start seeing it this weekend). So, I'll keep this short...

I feel like the 2009 movie was great and "Into Darkness" is...good. It's like how I felt after seeing "Search for Spock" after the previous awesomeness that was "Wrath of Kahn".

Into Darkness has great action, visuals, and the characters are still developing nicely into real emotional people you can relate to, which is nice.

However, this film doesn't "grab you" like the previous one and, because of some of the questionable story choices, you just aren't as engrossed or surprised by what happens as the film wraps up.



So...if you loved or even liked the 2009 movie, you will likely enjoy this one too.

If you're a die-hard Star Trek fan with mixed feelings about the 2009 movie, you'll likely not be satisfied with this one.

If you hated the 2009 movie, you will likely hate this one too.

Honestly, I think that the people who will enjoy it the most are the people who really never watched or cared about Star Trek at all. They have no preconceived notions or expectations.

That being said, other than my feeling that they tried too hard to integrate familiar Star Trek references/storylines into this movie, it is still a really fun action movie with some great performances and "she can't take much more, Captain!" fun.

So...if you're going to go see it (and I recommend that you do), keep your expectations in check, get some popcorn, a giant beverage, and just relax and have a good time.

Speaking of a good time, watch this Honest Trailer for Star Trek 2009. It's very entertaining...

Sneak Peek

It was announced this morning that Paramount will be screening the first nine minutes of the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness movie before the new Hobbit movie opening on December 14th....

HOLLYWOOD, CA (November 14, 2012) – Paramount Pictures will release the first 9-minutes from J.J. Abrams’ eagerly-awaited “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” exclusively in IMAX 3D months prior to the film’s official release in May 2013. This first-look at the movie will play in approximately 500 digital IMAX 3D theatres beginning December 14th.

“Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “Their use of the IMAX® Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”

As excited as I am to see the new Star Trek movie, I don't really want to see the first nine minutes and then have to wait five months to see the rest of the movie.

I'd rather see a trailer and be intrigued to see the film, not see an actual portion of it.

Plus, I am not planning to see the Hobbit movies in IMAX 3D (unless I love it so much in "regular D" that I decide to see all of the formats). Other than Avatar, I haven't really been impressed with 3D technology...so, I'll wait for those reviews.



So, I'll just wait until the trailer comes out...or until the nine minutes end up online (which never happens) and I accidentally see it there.

Into Snarkness

As many of you know, I was very disappointed with Star Trek Into Darkness, especially after loving the first Star Trek reboot (2009) so much. So, today's release of the "Honest Trailer: Star Trek Into Darkness rings especially true for me and, like the one they did for the previous film, is just as entertaining to watch.



Honesty really is the best policy...at least in this case.

Call me, maybe?

I thought that was hilarious.

Also, some more good Star Trek news was announced today...

The first trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness will premiere with screenings of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. To be clear this Trek trailer is a completely different thing than the 9-minute preview of the beginning of the new movie which will be shown at IMAX screenings of the Hobbit film. Also TrekMovie has confirmed that the IMAX screenings will not be showing the trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness. 

So if you want to see the full trailer, see non-IMAX Hobbit and if you want to see preview of the opening 9 minutes see IMAX Hobbit.

As I said in yesterday's post, I would rather see a trailer about the overall film, than just the first nine minutes and have to wait to see the rest of the film in May.

So I'm even more excited to see The Hobbit next month!

Star Trek Into Darkness Full trailer

Here is the full Star Trek Into Darkness trailer that was released in the theaters this weekend with many showings of The Hobbit (not mine, unfortunately. Devil!).


















I really hope the movie is as good as it looks in this trailer. I loved the last one.

Full Star Trek trailer

Although Paramount is releasing the first full length International trailers for Star Trek Into Darkness in the coming week with the new G.I. Joe: Retaliation sequel, it's available now online and is looking really fun-filled and action-packed!






















The trailers just keep looking better and better!

Only eight more weeks until it opens.

It's making me completely mental, I must say!



It also appears that the Dr. Carol Marcus character we knew from Star Trek: Wrath of Khan (on the right below) seems to have spent some quality time in the gym when she was younger (on the left) in the alternate universe.



It's good to know that Pilates has a place in the future.

I Khan't Wait!

A new Star Trek Into Darkness trailer was released today and, like the others, it just makes the movie look even better than the previous teaser trailers did.



If this is anywhere near as good as the previous Star Trek movie, I'm going to be very pleased.

Also, a new series of character posters were released this week as well.







AND...the Star Trek issue of Empire Magazine is about to hit newsstands soon.



I am so excited that I think I just threw up a little bit...in the back of my pants.

First Star Trek teaser trailer

This first trailer for the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness movie looks like it might just be all kinds of AWESOME!!



Can't wait to see the longer trailer next week when it shows with the Hobbit movie!!

Old Chum

Award-winning creature designer and judge on Face Off (and my old roommate), Neville Page, recently uploaded some of the cool Klingon designs to his site that were being considered for Star Trek Into Darkness. Pretty awesome...









They look so life-like and, oddly...kind of attractive.



How YOU doin'?



It's really inspiring when someone you know is so talented, works very hard, and then ends up building an amazing career out of doing something that they actually love.

I remember when Neville was just one of my roomies, sitting around the apartment molding utensils out of Silly Putty so he'd have something to eat his instant Ramen Noodles with...and now look at him...



I told him those soups had too much salt and were bad for his skin.

No one ever listens to me...

The last pic is really Neville made up as one of the Romulans he designed and wore in the first Star Trek movie he did with JJ Abrams.

His actual moisturizing regime is Hollywood-approved and child-safe.
