Gloria Vanderbilt

 photo GV_zpsarzpo93o.jpg

Very sad news today...

Gloria Vanderbilt died Monday morning, according to her son, CNN's Anderson Cooper. The fashion designer, artist and socialite was 95.

She died in her Manhattan home with friends and family at her side. "Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms," Cooper said in a statement. "She was a painter, a writer and designer but also a remarkable mother, wife, and friend. "She was 95 years old, but ask anyone close to her, and they'd tell you: She was the youngest person they knew -- the coolest and most modern."

Born in New York in 1924, Gloria Laura Morgan Vanderbilt grew up in France. Her father, financier Reginald Vanderbilt, the heir to a railroad fortune, died when she was a baby. Gloria was the focus of media attention at an early age, dubbed "the poor little rich girl" amid an intense custody battle between her mother and her father's wealthy sister, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. Though her aunt prevailed in court proceedings, young Gloria didn't know her well. She considered her nanny, Dodo, her mother figure.

When she was 17, she married Hollywood agent Pat DiCicco in 1941, against her Aunt Gertrude's wishes. She'd later concede she knew it was a mistake at the time. At 21, she took control of a $4.3 million trust fund her father had left her. She divorced DiCicco two months later and promptly remarried -- this time, to conductor Leopold Stokowski, who was 63 at the time.

In 1954, she made her stage debut in a production of the romantic drama, "The Swan," at the Pocono Playhouse in Mountainhome, Pennsylvania. She published a book of poetry the following year, the same year she divorced Stokowski. She found love again in Hollywood with director and producer Sidney Lumet, who would earn multiple Academy Award nominations for films, including "12 Angry Men," "Dog Day Afternoon" and "Network." The two married in 1956. Following their divorce in August 1963, Vanderbilt married for a final time on Christmas Eve of that year. With writer Wyatt Cooper, she had two more sons: Carter Cooper in 1965 and Anderson Cooper in 1967.

Tapping her artwork as a muse, she produced fashion and textile designs that would earn her the 1969 Neiman Marcus Fashion Award, before opening the door to a line of ready-to-wear garments in the mid-1970s. Under her GV Ltd. brand, she'd go on to sell millions of pairs of jeans bearing her signature and trademark swan logo -- a nod to her first production as a thespian.

Tragedy struck the family in 1978 when Wyatt Cooper died on the operating table during open-heart surgery. The family took another blow a decade later when Carter Cooper, 23, jumped from the 14th-floor terrace of his parents' penthouse in the Yorkville neighborhood of Manhattan. Carter had suffered with depression. The following years were rough ones for Vanderbilt. On top of coping with the loss of a son, her lawyer and psychiatrist bilked her out of millions. She successfully sued them, but still had to sell her mansion in the Hamptons and five-story Manhattan penthouse to pay off her debts.

Jones Apparel Group bought Gloria Vanderbilt Apparel Corp. in 2002 for $138 million, and Vanderbilt delved wholesale back into her love for art and writing.

In his mother's obituary, Cooper lovingly described his mom as "the strongest person I've ever met, but she wasn't tough. She never developed a thick skin to protect herself from hurt. She wanted to feel it all. She wanted to feel life's pleasures, its pains as well. "She trusted too freely, too completely and suffered tremendous losses, but she always pressed on, always worked hard, always believed the best was yet to come."

She lived a complex and extraordinary life for sure. I think it's what most of us hope for as we journey through our days on this planet.

She will be missed.

The Coop Scoop

AC

After much speculation over the years, Anderson Cooper has finally confirmed what many people already knew...

The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.

I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my collegues. In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted.

You can read his entire coming out letter to Andrew Sullivan (of the Daily Beast) here.

That is a picture of his current boyfriend, Ben Masini (with Fergie at a recent party).

And that is the firehouse that Anderson bought a few years ago in NYC and has been restoring ever since.

And that's Anderson's current housing until his new home is completed.

Oh...and this is just really funny.

Hilary

There...I think that just about covers it all.

As you were.

Subtle Headlines

I visited Gawker.com yesterday and was immediately drawn to two of their top-featured stories...

"Anderson Cooper Is a Giant Homosexual and Everyone Knows It"

and...

"What We Know (so far) About Anderson Cooper's Boyfriend"

Hilarious.

I just think it's so funny that, although Anderson has never actually come out, almost everyone seems to know/assume that he's gay and now aren't even trying to be sly about insinuating it in the media.

The stories above are entertaining to read and filled with detailed information about Anderson and his trainer/friend/bar owner/alleged-boyfriend Benjamin Maisani. Just click on the headlines above, if you wanna get the scoop.

I mean the alleged scoop.

Allegedly

And you didn't hear it from me, BUT....

Since Anderson Cooper has never officially discussed whether he is a homosapien or not, the press will just continue to do what they do best, speculate. Mr. 360 never goes out of his way to deny it (the Jodie Foster mantra), so it's likely true and he just doesn't feel the need to burst out of the closet in a shower of glitter waving his well-manicured jazz hands.

Which, I think, is just fine.

Until that changes, we can just follow stories like this one from Gawker, which lists a few of his "rumored business associates" (just like Beverly Leslie and Benji)...

This summer the Coop apparently dated an assistant to fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg. This is funny because she is the beard for gay man Barry Diller. Anderson supposedly wanted this young gent to move in with him. It looked like true love, though some suspected that the kid was just using poor Coopy-Poopy for his vast riches.

They said "Coopy-Poopy".

Insert Beevis and Butthead laugh here.

Then, later in the day, Gawker followed up with this story on a possible ex of Mr. Coopy-Poopy being on the new "Real World: Brooklyn" this season...

Just read your article on the dolphin trainer said to be Anderson's ex boy toy and I wanted to confirm that it's true. I'm from Miami and was actually at the club Buck 15 when I met J.D. He drunkenly informed me who his boyfriend was and when I didn't believe him he showed me pictures from his camera phone with Anderson and some dolphins...this was around the beginning of June...just wanted to give you a head's up!

I hope it's all true and that Anderson is doing everything he can to be happy, whether it's with JD, JR or JLo. He should be able to splash and splatter all he wants in private, just like the rest of us.

I'm just happy that I got to write my new favorite term, "Coopy-Poopy", three times in one posting.

It's the little jewels like that, in life, that make all the difference....

Anderson Pooper

Seems that Anderson Cooper got a case of the giggles last night on his show as he was discussing Gerard Depardieu's recent peeing-on-the-plane incident...

"[The cleaning crew] should thank their lucky stars it wasn't Depar-two."

That would be kinda hard to say with a straight face.

Especially for Anderson.

The Cooper Bowl

Anderson Cooper is interviewing Madonna on his talk show tomorrow to discuss her upcoming Half-time show at the Superbowl and all the usual stuff people ask her every time they interview her.

DVR set?

Check!

Anderson loves the Lady Gaga

"Our friend", Richard Simmons, stopped by "Anderson Cooper 360" last night and was his usual bedazzled energetic self (which is always entertaining)...

I'm thinking "Single Ladies" might have been a more appropriate song choice.

Happy New Year!

Here are a few highlights of 2010...

A creative mix of all the movies this past year.

The Top 25 Billboard hits of the year mashed into one fun song.

The celebrities who have passed...

I'll be hanging out with my friend Chris visiting from Los Angeles tonight, but I'm definitely taping Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper as they count down the New Year.

I hope you all have a safe and very Happy New Year!

D-lightful!

My summer has officially begun!

The new season of "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" is finally starting tonight on Bravo. It's always one of the highlights of my summer and always ends much quicker than I would like.

If "Two and a Half Men" is allowed to air twenty-two painful episodes each season, so should Kathy!

In case you missed this, here she is surprising Anderson Cooper last week for his birthday.

I love me some Kathy Griffin!!

Rolling In The Grammys

Photobucket

I was very happy to see Adele win all six of the Grammy Awards that she was nominated for last night. It was also wonderful to hear her singing again.

She looked and sounded great!

Also, if you missed her interview with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes last night, here ya' go:

The rest of the Grammy show was a fast-forward event for me. There was just too much rambling and a few too many unnecessary performances.

Speaking of which....

Photobucket

Nicki Minaj....I don't get her appeal at all.

One of my favorite fast-forwarded performances of the night.

It Gets Better

After the series of gay teen suicides over the past couple of weeks, many celebrities have spoken out about bullying and have offered words of support to others who may be going through similar circumstances.

Ellen spoke to Anderson Cooper about it.

Also, several celebrities have recorded messages to gay kids promoting the Trevor Project as a means to get help and advice if they need it. I had no idea that Tim Gunn had attempted suicide as a teen...

I'm glad he was able to eventually "make it work".

I can't imagine Project Runway without him.

Eggs-it interview

Photobucket

It was a big night for Lady Gaga last night. First she got some one-on-one time with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes.

I thought it was a pretty interesting interview and that she seems very smart about understanding and controlling her celebrity and appears to just be herself all the time, which I like.

I am surprised they didn't incorporate the footage of her crying in the stairway into the regular interview. I think it really would have made for a nice moment of realism amongst all the costume changes and "fame" talk.

Then, of course, she opened the Grammy Awards last night (and also won two awards) emerging from an egg and singing her new single, "Born This Way", from her upcoming album.

I am not quite sure what the shoulder horns are supposed to be, unless it's a statement about people being born with differences and that we should be accepting of all of them.

Or...that people are just born horny.

I guess they both kind of work.

Break out the box of wine

Well, the year is finally drawing to a close and I can think of no better way to celebrate that than by hanging with Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper.

I'm so glad that they're hosting the CNN countdown tonight for the third year in a row. They're very funny together and, I'm sure, Kathy will end up saying something hilarious and controversial, like she did last year.

I can't wait!

Also, I saw "Avatar" tonight and, I have to admit....it was pretty amazing.

If you're gonna see it (and I highly recommend that you do), see it in a good theater and definitely in 3D. The visuals are spectacular, the alien's eyes don't have that "dead" Polar Express-look, and the 3D glasses actually work really well (something I've never had luck with in the past). I went in with low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised.

I hope you all have a very happy, safe, and fun New Year's Eve!

Tired Hooker

Photobucket

Mary Christmas!

Kathy Griffin has a new special airing tonight on BravoTV called "Tired Hooker".

Emmy-winning comedian Kathy Griffin’s new stand up special on Bravo is appropriately titled Kathy Griffin: Tired Hooker. The special airing Tuesday represents her fourth stand-up special in this year alone.

This year’s hit list includes Kim Kardashian’s quickie divorce from Kris Humphries, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore's failed marriage, and even Nancy Grace’s wardrobe malfunction on Dancing with the Stars.

Sadly, BravoTV's Web site is pretty awful, so finding content or a video on it is a nightmare. Thankfully, Kathy appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss her new special and her upcoming New Year's Eve duties with Anderson Cooper (Yeah!)...

She still cracks me up and I really miss her D-list show...

Biltmore Estate

That is a really big house.

Oscar, Maggie and I spent most of yesterday touring the Biltmore Estate here in Asheville. It's the largest privately owned home (over 175,000 square feet....that's a lot of dusting!) in the United States and sits on over 75 acres, which include a winery, horse stables and several gardens and streams.

Unfortunately, they don't allow you to take any pictures of the inside of the home. The gal told us this as she was taking our picture inside the house (hoping we'd buy it at the end as a souvenir), which I thought was ironic and kind of ass. She said that camera flashes affect the restorations going on in the house. Then she said "SMILE and say CHEESE!" as she took two flash pictures of us right in the center of the house.

Honestly.

Since the house is owned by the Vanderbilt family, I believe that I need to make it my mission in life to befriend Anderson Cooper (who's mother is Gloria "do these jeans make me look fat" Vanderbilt) and have him take us back one day for a private photo tour. Until then, I'll just show you pictures of the outide...

The architecture is amazing. There are so many little details, like the variety of hand-crafted creatures around the windows.

The window critters all seem to be a bit evil-looking. However, since much of the house design and sconces was based on French architecture of the time (the 1800's), the orginal artists were probably crankier then with all of the head lice and scurvy going around. I doubt I'd be designing Barney sconces if I spent a great deal of time scratching my nether-regions and carving stone.

There was a great balcony area with an amazing view that allowed us to take a quick break and photos with our own cameras in the midst of the house wandering.

I did spy a couple of scary dolls, but couldn't take any photos of them inside the house (Devil!). However, when I stopped inside one of the gift shops, I did see a couple of unusual looking dolls for sale....

So, I stand by my theory that all famous museums have'em and that I will do my best to never have one in my house.

Or car....or neighborhood....or...

You get the picture.

Silver Fox and Friends

 photo Cooper_zps75d49290.jpg

Anderson Cooper and his partner, Ben Maisani attended the recent Vanity Fair Oscar pre-party and made a stop by the photo booth for a quick pic.

It also appears that Neil Patrick Harris and his partner, David Burtka, did the same...but likely after a few more drinks...

Kathy's Rockin' Eve

You won't find me ringing in the New Year with that annoying Seacrest kid and the ghost of Dick Clark. Oh Nooooo....it's Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper all the way, baby!

You know how much I love her and, based on what I saw from last year's broadcast on CNN, the two of them together should be a HOOT. They really seem to enjoy each other and, let's be honest, Kathy's a funny lady.

If you don't believe me....just watch them in the clips below as they talk about their gig tonight on CNN in Times Square.

I may have to get a box wine just for the occasion.

He's a Vanderbilt

Kathy Griffin was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" this week discussing working with Anderson Cooper on CNN's New Years Eve countdown and her infamous Richard reference.

Her new season of "My Life on the D-list" can't start soon enough for me.
