Block Ringy Dingys

I got an email reminding me to register my cell phone with the National Do Not Call center to stop unwanted sales calls from telemarketers...

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell/home phone: 888-382-1222.

It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number.

You can also register online here: DoNotCall.gov

It takes less than a minute, so it's definitely worth your time.

Unless, of course, you enjoy chatting with the sales kids at all hours...

UrbanLegends does list this particular email subject, but mainly to point out that there is no real deadline to do this...it's ongoing. Here is a bit more info:

The Federal Trade Commission does allow cell phone users to add their numbers to the National Do Not Call Registry (the same one already in force for landlines). Doing so probably isn't necessary, mind you -- per FCC regulations, telemarketers are already prohibited from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers -- but millions have already signed up, and so can you.

Contrary to what most variants of the email rumor claim, there is no 31-day, 16-day, or 8-day deadline for adding cell phone numbers to the Do Not Call list — indeed, there is no deadline whatsoever.

I figure, you have nothing to lose by doing it and, if it works in any small way to prevent telemarketers from calling during one of my shows...then it's all worth it.

Plus, if particular telemarketers do continue to call, the Web site does offer a section where you can file a complaint against them.

Enjoyable.

Hmmm...well, thanks for posting that Anonymous. I did register a year or so ago and, thankfully, I rarely get sales calls. So...guess it's all a game of chance.

Figure there is nothing to lose by trying. =)
