Well...if you come to the town

Photobucket

Ya' kinda have to go see the church. Of course, if it was called "ChristSpider"...I'd probably just pick up a brochure.

I took a little walk around the city today and, right around the corner, is the ChristChurch Cathedral. It's a pretty nice old church, filled with tourists (like me) taking pictures. I think they do regular churchy things at times...but not so much today.

The first Bishop of the church has a little monument in there. He was "sleeping", so I tried not to wake him and resisted the urge to pry open the top of his napatorium and peek in. The fact I even thought about it, probably should have sent me right to the confessional. But, there were so many people lined up there taking pictures, I figured I probably wasn't the only one who let it cross their mind for a second.

There is also a sign outside of the church, in their commercial annex, that says they also serve breakfast all day...so that's always nice to know (considering I didn't eat until around 1:30 today). The themed-breakfast menu possibilities are ENDLESS.

The town is very walkable, with wide streets, some brick-paved, a little park where a river runs through the town....

Also, some nice monuments and cafes along the way...

And, even a couple of my favorites...McDonalds and the King of Burgers....

There are lots of old buildings and streets and some arty stuff...so very interesting to just wander about.

I got back to the hotel and worked out in the little gym (just as busy as most hotel gyms)...

Then wandered up to the common lounge (complete with free internet/computers for those who are traveling without) to see if anyone was there. Nope...just me...

I also found out a little tidbit on the history of this hotel. The developer had some kind of issue with the tax people here in New Zealand and, after a few years of dealing with it, he ended up buying the building they were housed in and turned it into this hotel. The "SO" in "Hotel SO" stands for "Sod-Off", which Nana could translate easily as "F-Off" to the rest of us.

A very creative way to deal with the IRS.....

NICE pics, Kenny! And a church that serves breakfast ALL DAY? Now THAT's what I'M talkin'bout. Let's draft a sample menu - yes, the possibilities ARE endless, but c'mon, let's get that big ball rollin':

First off, they'd need snacks for folks in too big a picture-snapping hurry to sit down for an actual meal:
Christ Cakes
Jeez-its
Grail Mix

And then there's breakfast...
Ham & Jeez Omelet
Bagels & Cream Jeez
Post Hosties
Christ Krispies
Praisin' Bran

THAT should get you started... :-D

Well, you know how much I enjoy cereal:

Franken Mary and Boo Mary
Holy Bunches of Oats
Lucky Nuns (they're angelically delicious!)
Frosted Moses Wheats
Cap'n Christ with Crunch Marys

But, if you don't have time for cereal, you can just grab a Popetart and head out the door.

Hey, welcome to my hometown! I've been following your blog since trying to find info on Kathy's performance on the pink flight. I'm only about 3 blocks from where you're staying in Christchurch and its always interesting to see the place from someone else's perspective. If you're looking for a great breakfast try Drexel's in Hereford Street (only a few streets from where you're staying) and for great coffee go to C1 in High St. Enjoy New Zealand :-)
